Senate Committee Chairman Calls for Grassroots Engagement on Postharvest Technologies

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, has reiterated the commitment of the National Assembly to enhancing food security and agricultural sustainability in Nigeria. His message was delivered by the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Senator Titus Zam Tartenger, at the 2nd Postharvest Connect Conference and Exhibition, held alongside the Cassava Conference at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja. Organized by the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) under the leadership of Prof. Lateef Oladimeji Sanni.

The event brought together key stakeholders in agriculture, research, and policy-making to address the pressing challenges of postharvest losses and food waste in Nigeria. In his goodwill message, Senator Lalong emphasized the critical role of postharvest technologies in strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural competitiveness and ensuring food availability and affordability. “As parliamentarians, we recognize the immense importance of food security to our economy and the livelihoods of our farmers. The theme of this year’s conference, ‘Leveraging Postharvest Technologies to Scale up Africa’s Agricultural Competitiveness’, is both timely and essential,” the senator stated. He noted that such conferences offer valuable platforms for knowledge exchange, innovation, and strategic collaborations that can translate into tangible improvements across the agricultural value chain. From smallholder farmers to large agribusinesses, the adoption of modern postharvest solutions can significantly reduce losses and boost farmers’ incomes.

Senator Lalong also stressed the importance of extending these initiatives beyond urban centers to rural communities, where the majority of farmers are based. “We must take conferences like this to the grassroots, so that farmers on the front lines cannot only benefit from these innovations but also contribute their insights and experiences toward shaping practical solutions,” he urged. Senator Lalong assured stakeholders of the Senate’s continued support for policies and legislative measures aimed at improving Nigeria’s postharvest systems and creating a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector”.

The event featured exhibitions, technical sessions, and interactive forums designed to showcase cutting-edge technologies and foster partnerships in the postharvest sector. Senator Lalong concluded his address by commending NSPRI and all participants for their dedication to advancing Nigeria’s agricultural future. “Together, we can build a sustainable food system that not only feeds our nation but empowers our farmers and strengthens our economy,” he said.
