Breaking New Grounds: NSPRI and Bowen University Forge Strategic Alliance for Research and Innovation

In a bold step toward advancing scientific research, academic development, and technological exchange, the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) and Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, have officially sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the NSPRI Headquarters, Ilorin, Kwara State. This landmark agreement which was held on the 6th of May, 2025 sets the stage for groundbreaking collaboration in research, academic exchange, capacity building, and technology transfer, thereby fostering innovation that will reshape Nigeria’s agricultural and postharvest sectors.

The Bowen University delegation was led by Director of the Research and Strategic Department, Professor Ademola, along with Deputy Director, Dr. Akinbode James and the Provost of the Postgraduate School, Professor Bolanle Otebayo. The delegation engaged in fruitful discussions with NSPRI’s Executive Director, Professor Lateef O. Sanni, and members of the Institute Management Committee (IMC). NSPRI Executive Director, Prof. Lateef. O Sanni underscored the importance of inter-institutional partnerships in addressing national challenges such as food security and postharvest losses. Prof. Sanni proposed accessibility of Bowen University’s academic staff and students to NSPRI’s state-of-the-art facilities including the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) laboratory, cold chain systems, and advanced storage technologies for hands-on learning and knowledge exchange.

The initiative further includes a staff mobility programme that would enable NSPRI’s technical experts to contribute to academic instruction at Bowen University in key areas such as food science, postharvest technology, and agricultural innovation. The Bowen University Vice Chancellor, Professor Jonathan Babalola lauded the collaboration, and expressed optimism for its far-reaching impact. He also extended an invitation to Prof. Sanni to serve as Guest Speaker at the University’s upcoming Boot Camp on June 3, 2025.

Prof. Babalola said that the signing of the MoU between the two Institutions served as a shared vision to bridge the gap between research and practical application, adding that the strategic alliance is poised to cultivate a new generation of scientists, researchers, and postharvest specialists. He noted his expectations as opening fresh avenues for postgraduate training, applied research, and sustainable development within Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He also remarked that the partnership marks a major milestone in academia-industry collaboration, setting a precedent for future initiatives that will shape the landscape of agricultural science and technological advancement.
